The Full Story
Previously the family had a site we started from scratch in the Hakataramea Valley, the rocks, the wind, everything was against us including mobs of sheep and cattle. But the Vineyard become a producing site and when we sadly left for Queenstown it was another family who took over.
The new site in Gibbston is an existing Vineyard planted 25 years ago with Pinot Noir and Pinot Gris grapes, this site has been expertly tended by a local Viticulturist and now is our new project were we hope to add some further love to the land and vines and hopefully get rewarded with great wine. Our new label Domaine Gibbston represents the terroir of steep mountains and wind blown loess soils settled into the North sloping site. Some of the regions best Pinots have been born here as the grapes grown here have been a part of a number of different labels over the years. In the next few years we are hoping to acquire and use advanced technologies to assist to attain organic status from the existing sustainable NZ status. These new ideas, some of which have never been used in New Zealand before will reduce or eliminate sprays that we would rather not use, and give us pest, pathogen and weed control on a natural basis. There is always plenty to do on a vineyard and we will likely welcome friends and family to assist us on our journey. As a unique offering we are promoting our Friends & Family Barrel Selection. This has been created so you can become involved, even to a hands on level, with the Grape from the vines to the table, your own Wine in your own labelled Barrel, and in time in the bottle. This is about getting together and enjoying the process and the final outcome. We hope you enjoy the wines that we create and a big "cheers" to all!
